A small clinical study suggests acupuncture could play a useful role in helping stroke survivors regain movement in weakened limbs. Stroke, a leading cause of long-term disability, often leaves patients with paralysis or reduced strength on one side of the body, despite intensive rehabilitation programs that include physical and occupational therapy.
In research published in CNS Neuroscience & Therapeutics, 56 stroke patients with motor impairments were randomly assigned to receive either traditional acupuncture or sham acupuncture over two weeks. Those given real acupuncture showed greater improvements in limb control, as measured by standard motor tests. Brain imaging also revealed increased gray matter volume in regions involved in movement planning, sensation, and coordination, and these structural changes were closely tied to better motor recovery.
The findings suggest acupuncture may support neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to reorganize after injury—potentially enhancing conventional stroke rehabilitation. The original report is available via Knowridge.
