But why? <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33740591\/\">This study<\/a> aimed to understand the processes and decisional pathways through which chronic illness patients choose treatments outside of regular allopathic medicine.<\/p>\n<p>It employed Charmaz\u2019s constructivist grounded theory methods to collect and analyze data. Using theoretical sampling, 21 individuals suffering from chronic illness and who had used SCAM treatments participated in face-to-face in-depth interviews conducted in Miami\/USA.<\/p>\n<p>Seven overarching themes emerged from the data to describe how and why people with chronic illness choose SCAM treatments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>influences,<\/li>\n<li>desperation,<\/li>\n<li>being averse to allopathic medicine and allopathic medical practice,<\/li>\n<li>curiosity and chance,<\/li>\n<li>ease of access,<\/li>\n<li>institutional help,<\/li>\n<li>trial and error.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/edzardernst.com\/2021\/04\/why-do-chronically-ill-patients-use-so-called-alternative-medicine\/\">Keep reading at edzardernst.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A substantial proportion of consumers now use healthcare options known as so-called alternative medicine (SCAM).
