Men May Need Twice the Exercise as Women to Lower Heart Disease Risk

A new study published in Nature Cardiovascular Research reveals that men may need nearly twice as much exercise as women to achieve the same reduction in heart disease risk. The research, which analyzed data from over 85,000 adults in the UK, found that women who exercised 250 minutes per week saw a 30% drop in heart disease risk, while men required 530 minutes to match that benefit. Even at the standard recommendation of 150 minutes weekly, women’s risk dropped by 22% compared to 17% for men. Experts suggest differences in hormones and muscle composition may explain the gap, with women’s higher estrogen levels and slow-twitch muscle fibers offering greater cardiovascular protection from less activity. Cardiologists emphasize that while more exercise is better for everyone, these findings could lead to sex-specific guidelines in the future. For more details, read the full study here.
