If you dread long workouts or crowded gyms, research suggests you can still stay healthy through short bursts of everyday activity — known as “exercise snacking.” Dr. Jo Blodgett, a senior research fellow at University College London, says these quick moments of effort — like taking the stairs, briskly walking between bus stops, or speeding up your usual walk — can deliver major cardiovascular benefits.
Blodgett calls the approach “vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity” (VILPA) and notes that even a few minutes a day can boost heart health and life expectancy. The key, she says, is reducing sedentary time — standing, walking, or moving regularly, rather than spending hours sitting still.
