‘All or Nothing’ Mindset Leaves Many Stuck on the Couch

A growing body of research suggests our mindset about exercise may be doing more damage than our lack of willpower. Recent work led by Dr. Michelle Segar highlights “all-or-nothing” thinking as a major barrier: If we cannot meet the ideal of 30 minutes a day plus strength sessions, many of us simply do nothing at all. In a culture that treats workouts as expendable chores and glorifies ultra-fit bodies, movement easily loses out to competing demands. Segar’s Motivation MAP, first developed in 1997, offers a different script: “feel good,” “everything counts,” and “prioritize self-care.” Health organizations are beginning to echo that message, encouraging five- or ten-minute bouts, self-compassion, and celebrating small wins as meaningful progress.
