A recent study published in Frontiers in Nutrition challenges the long-held belief that the Mediterranean diet is the best for weight loss. Conducted by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, the research highlights the benefits of a low-fat vegan diet, which significantly reduces inflammatory compounds known as advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) by 73%. Participants on this diet lost an average of 13 pounds, while those on the Mediterranean diet showed no weight change.
The study attributes the reduction in AGEs primarily to the exclusion of meat, added fats, and dairy products. Dr. Hana Kahleova, the lead author, emphasizes that opting for a low-fat vegan diet can effectively aid in weight loss and reduce the intake of harmful AGEs.
