Stress, Diet and the Science Behind Going Gray

A growing body of research is challenging the idea that gray hair is simply a matter of age and genetics. New findings reported by The Jerusalem Post suggest that chronic stress and poor nutrition can damage the stem cells that produce melanin, the pigment responsible for hair color, potentially accelerating graying.

Stress appears to boost oxidative stress in the body, upsetting the balance of antioxidants and depleting key nutrients such as vitamin B12, iron, copper, folic acid and biotin – all vital for healthy hair pigmentation. Diets rich in these nutrients, along with antioxidant-packed fruits, vegetables and quality oils, may help delay premature graying, especially during stressful periods.
