A Journal of Clinical Oncology study reports that mindfulness-based cancer recovery and tai chi/qigong programs were associated with less fatigue and pain interference among cancer survivors after treatment, according to a University of Calgary release. The Mindfulness and Tai Chi for Cancer Health (MATCH) study followed more than 500 survivors and compared both programs with a waitlist. Participants chose their practice when they had a preference, so the trial was only partly randomized. Both approaches were linked to improved pain interference and fatigue, tai chi/qigong was also linked to better sleep, and effects on pain intensity were minimal. The researchers say they hope the findings prompt medical teams to discuss including mind-body therapies in cancer care.
