Subsidized Exercise Classes Yield Big Gains for Seniors

A recent study by Monash University has revealed that subsidized exercise classes can significantly improve physical function and reduce sedentary time among older Australians. The research, commissioned by Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA), involved 7,000 participants over the age of 65 and demonstrated notable gains in strength, mobility, and overall physical activity levels.

Led by Dr. Christina Ekegren and her team, the study found that 12-week exercise programs of low-to-moderate intensity, conducted by accredited professionals, were particularly effective. These classes, which included activities such as aerobics, pilates, and yoga, were offered at an average cost of $8 per session.

The findings underscore the importance of making exercise programs accessible and affordable for seniors, aligning with the World Health Organization’s recommendation to enhance physical activity services for older adults. ESSA President Dr. Brendan Joss emphasized the need for scalable and effective programs to address the health concerns of the aging population.
