Wisconsin Governor Pushes for Marijuana Legalization in 2025

Governor Tony Evers of Wisconsin has placed marijuana legalization high on his agenda for the 2025 legislative session. During a recent budget listening tour, Evers listed cannabis legalization as a key priority, second only to healthcare expansion. Despite the governor’s long-standing support for ending cannabis prohibition, he has faced consistent opposition from the Republican-controlled legislature.

While Democrats gained seats in the recent election, breaking the GOP supermajority, they remain outnumbered in both chambers. This political landscape may complicate efforts to pass broad legalization before the 2026 elections. Nevertheless, Evers remains committed to the cause, citing potential tax revenue benefits and the need for evidence-based justice reform.

The governor’s push comes as neighboring states have already legalized recreational marijuana, potentially costing Wisconsin millions in lost tax revenue.
