A recent study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry highlights the potential of psilocybin-assisted therapy to promote positive personality changes in adults with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Researchers from NYU Grossman School of Medicine found that participants who received psilocybin therapy experienced significant reductions in neuroticism and increases in extraversion and openness compared to those given a placebo. These shifts in personality traits may help mitigate relapse risks by reducing impulsivity, a key factor linked to excessive drinking.
The trial involved 84 participants, who received either psilocybin or an active placebo alongside 12 weeks of psychotherapy. Results showed that personality changes were associated with decreased alcohol consumption, particularly among those with higher baseline drinking levels.
The findings suggest that psilocybin could serve as a valuable complement to traditional AUD treatments. For more details, read the full article on Healio here.
