Exercise Proven to Boost Survival Rates in Colon Cancer Patients, Landmark Study Finds

A groundbreaking international study has found that structured exercise programs significantly improve survival rates and reduce cancer recurrence in colon cancer patients. The three-year trial, featured at the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual meeting and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, is the first randomized controlled trial to directly link exercise with better outcomes for cancer survivors.

Researchers tracked 889 patients across five countries, finding those who participated in regular, coached exercise sessions had 28% fewer cancer recurrences and 37% fewer deaths than those who received only educational materials. Experts now urge cancer centers and insurers to consider exercise coaching as a standard part of care. “Now we can say definitively exercise causes improvements in survival,” said study co-author Kerry Courneya.
